Prop Firm Trading Plan: What to Write Down Before the First Trade

A prop firm trading plan should convert the firm’s rules and your own strategy statistics into clear, mechanical actions before emotion is involved.

A prop firm trading plan is useful because evaluation pressure makes improvisation expensive. The plan does not need to predict the market. It needs to specify what you will do when common situations occur: a losing streak, a large early win, a drawdown warning, a reset-time position or a tempting trade outside your normal setup.

How to write a prop firm trading plan

If you are asking how to write a prop firm trading plan, start with constraints before setups. Record the exact daily and maximum loss rules, the reset time, your personal stop, maximum risk per trade, maximum combined correlated risk and the conditions that force you to stop for the day. Then define the setups you are allowed to take.

Your trading plan for funded account rules should also include what changes after you pass. If funded-stage consistency, withdrawal or news rules differ from evaluation, write a second section. A plan that ends at “pass the challenge” is incomplete if the real objective is durable payouts.

Prop firm trading checklist before buying challenge

A prop firm trading checklist before buying challenge can be short: have you saved the current rules, converted all limits to cash, tested your normal strategy against them, identified the reset timezone, confirmed prohibited trading windows, and modelled the effect of your worst realistic losing streak? If any answer is no, you are not ready to pay.

The earlier prop firm challenge strategy article explains the rules-first framework behind this. The plan is where that framework becomes operational. Keep it visible during the session; a plan stored in a folder you never open cannot constrain behaviour.

Write decisions as if/then rules

“Be disciplined” is too vague. “If I take two full losses, I stop until the next daily reset” is testable. “If remaining maximum-drawdown cushion falls below four normal losses, I cut risk in half” is testable. “If the firm changes a material rule, I stop and recalculate before trading” is testable.

Review the plan after a meaningful sample of trades, not after every emotional outcome. A single win does not prove the rules are too conservative, and a single loss does not prove the method is broken.

Plan the boring operational details

Add platform login checks, contract or symbol selection, maximum spread or slippage conditions and a pre-session rule screenshot to the plan. Operational mistakes can breach an account just as effectively as a bad market call. If the rule page or dashboard looks different from what you saved, stop and reconcile the difference before placing risk. A written plan is strongest when it covers both trading decisions and the mechanics around them.

Important: this is an educational planning framework. Your own rules should reflect your strategy statistics and the exact current terms of the programme.
